The genre needs more AAA point-and-click adventures... or do we?

A common lament among adventure game fans ever since the genre fell from the top of its industry perch in the 1990s is that we’re now permanently “indie,” no longer getting any big-budget games anymore – or if we do, they’re nothing like the point-and-click games we love from the Golden Age. But did we ever, really? Adventure games were never actually AAA-level productions, instead benefitting more from innovation and clever design than deep-pocketed publishers. And would they really be any better if they suddenly had wads of cash to improve them?
A recent article in The Gamer believes they would, but Joshua and Jack aren’t so sure, discussing the merits – and potential consequences – of huge budgets and what that might mean for the genre. To cap off the conversation, they once again finish off with their top five lists, this time of games that over-extended themselves and suffered as a result.
