The truth about science fiction

Science fiction has given us an abundance of fantastic adventure games over the years, such as Beneath a Steel Sky, Machinarium, Gemini Rue, Technobabylon, To the Moon, Stasis and many, many more, the most recent (and perhaps best?) being Wadjet Eye’s Old Skies. But why? What is it about sci-fi that appeals to us as a genre, and why does it work well with adventure games? For that matter, what exactly is science fiction?

To boldly go where others have surely gone before, just never quite like this, not one but TWO special guests join Joshua and Jack in delving the mysteries of the sci-fi universe: Author and game developer Shawn Mills knows a little about the subject matter, having co-created the Space Quest II remake with Infamous Adventures, while Adventure Game Hotspot writer Sam Amiotte-Beaulieu brings his own enthusiasm and expertise to a topic near and dear to his heart.

Together the group share some of their favorite science fiction franchises, debate what does and doesn’t deserve to be called sci-fi, discuss the merits of various sub-genres like cyberpunk, alien invasion and time travel, and answer the really important questions: Star Wars or Star Trek, and what sci-fi inventions do we most want to come true?

That’s not all, but the rest is not what you think. Rather than finish with traditional “top five” lists, the guys introduce the TEN games that will appear soon in a brand new feature for Adventure Game Hotspot, the upcoming “Hotly Anticipated” list of games we’re most excited about and creating a buzz in the community. Which games made the first cut? You’ll have to tune in to find out!
