Many adventure game mysteries involve brilliant detectives intuitively cracking cases while cracking wise, but in the real world of advanced modern technology, much of a criminal investigation's success is due to the meticulous grunt work that happens behind the scenes. As with k148 Game Studio's recent Forensic: M.E. Protocol, in Binary Impact and Alchemical Works' newly released Forensics: Crime Scene Detective, YOU are that grunt.

Rather than a single case, this game is comprised of multiple scenarios that require the skills of a trained professional – or at least, a professional in training, as you are here – to determine whether each is a matter of "self-defense, murder, an accident, or a staged crime scene." When "the sirens fade and silence settles over the crime scene," that's where you come in, as it's your responsibility to examine each location for clues, leave markers, photograph what you find, and then bag it up as evidence. Some clues stubbornly refuse to be noticed at a glance, so at times you might have to lean around obstacles or get right down on the ground for a better view. Even then, you may need to dig into your handy forensics briefcase for the proper equipment to identify hidden detils, whether "a subtle fingerprint on a wine glass, a deleted message on a smartphone, [or] a tiny blood spatter that casts doubt on a statement."

The job's not done when your discoveries are sent off for processing, though, as you must then follow them back to the lab, where "DNA profiling, ballistic analysis, and digital forensics help transform evidence into conclusions." With some remote help from your colleagues via computer email, you must ensure that "every lead [is] verified, every hypothesis tested, and every conclusion supported by facts." The goal here is not strictly entertainment but authenticity as well, from the first-person 3D graphics to every minute detail of your investigations, which have been created "in close collaboration" with real professionals at Germany's State Criminal Police Office Rhineland-Palatinate. The cases themselves have been "inspired by real-world scenarios," and players are challenged to "think methodically, analyse evidence with precision," and form deductions based on "logic and evidence-driven conclusions over scripted outcomes." The results of your analysis should "incriminate perpetrators – or exonerate the innocent," but it's up to you to decide which evidence is relevant. Your choices can have serious consequences, so beware that "not everything that seems obvious is the truth."

If you think you have what it takes (and you will be graded by your superiors), then glove up right away as Forensics: Crime Scene Detective is available now on Steam for Windows PC, along with console versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
