Fantastical narrative adventure inspired by Spirited Away, The Little Prince, and Coco
They say time is relative, and we’re about to get a rather extreme example of that in indie developer StudioBando’s upcoming magical realist adventure, Sopa.
The game stars a young boy named Miho, who “steps into the pantry to get a potato for his grandmother’s soup [and is] pulled into a distant fantastical land.” Here he must “retrace the steps of a mysterious great traveler before him” and find a way to get back to his own world. Each time he succeeds in returning with a new ingredient, however, Miho discovers to his surprise that “he's a little bit taller, and his grandmother a little bit older.”
Inspired by Miyazaki’s Spirited Away, Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince, and Pixar’s Coco, Sopa is described as an “emotional narrative adventure about the things we pass along.” Presented in free-roaming third-person 3D, the game tasks players with venturing “through a world of endless deserts, floating mountains, and talking beasts, outsmarting thieves and meeting quirky characters along the way.” Blending mature subtext with “laugh-out-loud dialogue,” the story will integrate a variety of puzzles to solve, Quick Time Events to conquer, collectibles to find and sidequests to complete, resulting in a substantial projected playtime of 10-12 hours. And as if that weren’t enough, the developers are also teasing the promise of new characters and adventures in DLC still to come.
There’s no firm launch date scheduled yet for Sopa, but the game is due to be launched on Steam for Windows PC sometime in 2023. While you wait, you can follow its progress through the official website.
