Hand-drawn point-and-click psychological thriller unveiled by the creators of No, I’m not a Human
With their psychological thriller No, I’m not a Human drawing ever closer, indie developer Trioskaz is already looking ahead to tormenting us even further with another haunting horror game, Lost in the Roots.
A girl named Trisha awakens to find herself trapped in the attic of "a strange house encircled by barbed wire and watched over by surveillance cameras." And that's the least of her problems. She's guarded by her captor, Yakob, an outcast with a dark past who forces Trisha to take a "mysterious medication" that keeps her continually drugged. Soon, as Trisha begins exploring her environment in search of a way out, she comes to discover that "escape might be nothing more than a cruel illusion." Even if she's able to get out of the house, she'll need to deal with the "vast, mysterious forest that has come alive" all around it, which "reflects the darkest memories of anyone who dares approach." As Trisha seeks answers to why Yakob abducted her, her survival will depend on discovering how the forest is "invading their minds" before it "finally gets what it's after."
Although set in the same "twisted, enigmatic world" as No, I’m not a Human, Lost in the Roots looks and plays much differently. In most respects it's a conventional 2D point-and-click adventure with lovely hand-drawn graphics and frame-by-frame animation. Don't let the game's artistic beauty fool you, however, as its "eerie abandoned research stations, ominous catacombs, dense foreboding woods, and ghostly deserted towns" promise a chilling exploration of "deeply personal themes" such as "the unsettling feeling of guilt, the search for self-identity, the complex relationships between parents and children, and the all-encompassing fear of the inevitability of death." In between encounters with panic-inducing monsters, you'll have to "solve intricate puzzles [and] tackle atmospheric mini-games" as you gradually begin to piece together the "grim, tangled mystery hidden within the house's walls and the shadows of the forest."
There is no target release date for Lost in the Roots yet, but the game is ready for wishlisting on Steam, where you can currently register to join the ongoing playtest.
