City of Voices video interview – A new Golden Idol-like deduction game from Kini Games

As an avid fan of deduction games, from Return of the Obra Dinn to the Golden Idol series, it was with great interest that I heard that one of the designers and writers of The Rise of the Golden Idol was branching out to make his own game in a similar style called City of Voices. So for my Indies In Depth podcast series, which invites developers to talk a little about the process of making their games and what happens behind the scenes, I asked creator Will, aka Kini Games, to give us a breakdown of what we can expect – and also what working on one of the most successful indie games of the past few years has been like.

Whilst there will be a similar style of deduction as in Golden Idol, with static scenes that require figuring out what's happening in each of them, pictures rather than words will be used to solve the puzzles in City of Voices (to make it harder to brute force for players – and easier localise for Will!). Brought to life through beautiful pixel art by Matt Frith, the story won't be quite as murderous as the Idol series, with a little more heart, but Will says don't be fooled by the child-like scenes we're seeing in the trailer – it will get weird and fantastical too.
