Narrative adventure presents two contrasting perspectives on 17th-century French and Indigenous first encounters

The centuries-old colonization of lands that would become modern-day Canada was fraught with conflict and turmoil between two very different cultures. The upcoming Indigenous-led narrative adventure Two Falls (Nishu Takuatshina) seeks to present one possible tale from this period – or rather two opposing but intertwining tales, as seen through the eyes of its lead protagonists.

Jeanne is a devout, "spirited French woman" who set sail for Nouvelle-France (New France) hoping to make a better life for herself. Unfortunately, a shipwreck left her the sole survivor, far from the French colonies, and forced to "navigate the uncharted wilderness of Canada" with only the help of Capitaine, her "loyal canine companion." Maikan is a "young hunter-gatherer from an isolated Innu community," born after the arrival of the European settlers, who must set out to "travel west when his people are afflicted by a strange illness." Each faces their own unique trials and challenges that will put their traditions and beliefs to the test, and their "contrasting perspectives will inform their encounters with the denizens of this divided land." Your choices will not only help shape their own individual paths, but "the actions of one may have consequences for the other."

Indie developer Unreliable Narrators is collaborating closely with Indigenous creators, and the game's content is being "validated by a Council of Innu and Wendat Elders" to ensure authentic cultural representation. Its original soundtrack, too, is by native musicians and singers, accompanying your free-roaming, first-person journey through "lush painterly environments." There will be "two distinct artistic directions" depending on the active character, reflecting their "radically different points of view" that evolve over the course of the game. How they evolve will be up to you, as your choices will "will influence the protagonists and their perception of the characters they encounter, the events they face, and the environments they explore." There is no "right" way, or even objective truth, as "all stories can be interpreted in many different ways," such that the same events can have result in "very different meanings" for Jeanne and Malkan as they struggle to adapt to a changing world.

There is no firm target release date, but Two Falls (Nishu Takuatshina) is currently on pace to be launched on Steam sometime in the third quarter of 2024. To follow its progress in the meantime, be sure to check out the official website for additional details.
