How long did it take you to finish Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge? Wait, wrong question. How fast were you able to finish it? Whatever your answer, if it ended in “hours,” then pffft – clearly you’re an amateur. (Don’t worry, so are we!)
You might not think that Guybrush Threepwood’s quest for the four map pieces to the fabled treasure of Big Whoop would be a candidate for speedruns, but you’d be wrong. There’s a passionate group of speedrunners who have dedicated themselves to completing the original 1991 LucasArts classic (not the 2010 remake, both because it’s a fundamentally different version, and because just no) in less time than it took some of us to hock a winning loogie in the game’s spitting contest. To them it’s serious business to shave every last second off their times in what an appreciative Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert describes as “almost a separate art form.”
Since 2020, YouTube creator OneShortEye has done a masterful job of making documentary films chronicling the fan community’s speedrunning efforts for various retro PC adventures. His latest is Monkey Island 2, making it an ideal choice for his debut as a partner in the Adventure Game Hotspot Network.
This is NOT a speedrun in its own right, but rather an in-depth look at the speedrunners themselves and the little tricks and … well, secrets to getting faster and faster times. It’s a fascinating watch, so whatever you do, don’t speedrun the video! Fast forwarding is cheating, plus you risk missing lots of great insights and some scattered interview clips with Ron Gilbert himself. So sit back, get comfy, and enjoy!
[Spoiler warnings galore – although really, if you haven’t played MI2 by now, c’mon. It’s time.]
The Adventure Game Hotspot Network is a collective of talented, dedicated video producers who work entirely independently but have joined forces to promote each other’s efforts.
