Ron Gilbert moves forward with Death By Scrolling

When the creator of Monkey Island, Ron Gilbert, announced he was making a new game, I don't think many could have guessed that rather than the usual point-and-click fare that we know him so well for, he instead was going to make a rogue-like vertical scrolling RPG, called Death By Scrolling.

I got the chance to chat to him about the game, set to come out some time this year, and why he decided to make the move into a more unfamiliar genre in the video interview below. It seems that whilst Ron is "always thinking about the next adventure game," he believes the traditional point-and-click style of his previous titles might now be a thing of the past, as he searches for new ways to tell stories (and knowing Ron, funny ones at that). Some might be sad to think that we might never see another traditional adventure game from one of the key figures of the genre, but it feels fitting for someone who breathed such life into those stories to want to continue to do so, just in a more modern and creative way.

And besides...maybe we'll still get another Thimbleweed Park game after all...? There's some very sparse details of an inkling of a semblance of an idea he had for one mentioned in our chat, though you may have to hold your breath for longer than ten minutes – above or under water – for something more solid to materialise there.
