As a huge fan of Lucas Pope's work as a solo developer (Papers, Please, Return of the Obra Dinn) it was fantastic to be able to catch up with him to find out more about his latest game made exclusively for the Playdate, Mars After Midnight. He explained more about the "entrant-screening, mess-tidying, session-planning work simulator," and confirmed that his next game will be a return to PC (and definitely not VR). There were also some intriguing reveals about his previous games – such as how Obra Dinn was originally supposed to be a series, and how the final scene gives an idea as to what any future sequels might have been about. We also chatted about his design process for making games, his thoughts on using AI to help create games, and advice he has for solo developers. Enjoy!
