Dysfunctional family mystery inspired by Knives Out unveiled by the creators of Duck Detective
Families, right? Everyone's got a black sheep or two that make get-togethers a little awkward. But at least none of them (probably) want to kill you. Be thankful, then, that you're not part of the family in Apple Crumble, the upcoming new mystery adventure from the creators of Duck Detective.
There are no waterfowl or bird puns to be found this time around. Instead, players assume the role of Jess, part of an all-too-human family gathering for your grandma's 84th birthday. What should be a time of joy and celebration is anything but here, however, as "one of the guests is out to knife your Nan." It's up to you to figure out who before it's too late: It could be your "stressed-out mum," or perhaps your boisterous Uncle Alan having a midlife crisis. Or maybe it's the "weird man in your bedroom" instead – sounds suspicious, but it could still be someone else. To find out who the would-be killer is, you must "explore your childhood home, reconnect with your dysfunctional family, and work out who you can trust before it’s time for tea."
Unlike Duck Detective's isometric third-person perspective and cutout characters, Apple Crumble is a first-person, cel-shaded 3D adventure in which you are free to wander your family home first-hand. Inspired by the film Knives Out, it's designed to be a "creepy-cozy mystery thriller" in which you scour the rooms throughout the house for clues, and chat with your fully voiced family members in the hopes of catching them saying something incriminating. You'll also want to be keep your eye out for Polaroids, as filling up the family photo album will provide additional insight into your family's strained history. With such a confined setting, the overall experience isn't expected to take long to complete, with a projected 60-90 minutes of "walking sim" gameplay.
There is no firm target release date just yet, but Apple Crumble is currently in the oven and is due to be served up on Steam sometime later this year for Windows, Mac and Linux.
