New developer to helm standalone PS5 sequel to Supermassive's 2015 cinematic horror adventure

More than ten years ago, Supermassive Games introduced us to a group of young adults gathering on the dark and snowy Blackwood Mountain for a celebration. Things did... not go well for them in Until Dawn. For the long-awaited encore, under the surprise direction of developer Firesprite Games, the whole new cast of Until Dawn 2 gets together in a warmer, much sunnier location. Surely disaster couldn't strike again in such a tropical paradise, could it? (Spoiler: it could, and will.)

This time around, players will follow a group of ghost hunters with a channel devoted to the paranormal called Dead True. Or perhaps, ghost stagers would be more accurate, as their "supernatural" adventures so far have been entirely made up. The team is riding high after securing a lucrative TV network deal, and better still, their first paid assignment sends them off to enjoy "sun, sand [and] secrets" on an abandoned tropical island that is supposedly "haunted by a woman’s chilling story of demons and ghostly phenomena." But even if they weren't frauds, nothing could have prepared them for what they'll encounter at this idyllic locale, as "beneath this blissful exterior hide dreadful and heartbreaking secrets – centuries old and hungry for vengeance." Here the terrified ghost hunters become the hunted, and as they "come face-to-face with real horrors [they] must start living up to their reputation to survive until dawn." That won't be easy to do, however, as they'll also need to navigate "some very not-safe-for-the-workplace drama as their complicated relationships bubble to the surface."

The biggest difference between games is the change of developer for Until Dawn 2, but as Creative Director Stu Tilley explains on the PlayStation.Blog, the team at Firesprite are all big fans of the original and are committed to "honoring that core DNA: character drama, tough choices, and those unforgettable horror moments that made the first game so special." That means we can expect another "modern horror experience packed with intrigue, emotion, twists, and the kind of choices that will keep you up at night." The motion-captured cast will mostly be new, but there will be at least one familiar face in the person of Peter Stormare's Dr. Hill, giving the series a bit of throughline continuity. But despite the change of characters and setting, there will be plenty of similarities for series fans, from the highly cinematic 3D presentation to the many "gut-wrenching decisions" you'll be forced to make, which will not only impact your relationship with others but even have life-and-death ramifications. Even the seemingly smallest of choices can "set off a Butterfly Effect, sending your story spinning off towards unforeseen consequences." And as before, the consequences of your actions are permanent in a game where "everyone can live [and] everyone can die."

There is no firm target release date just yet, but for now it appears that Until Dawn 2 (again, like its predecessor when it first launched) will be a PlayStation exclusive when it launches sometime in 2027.
