Cozy slideshow-styled fantasy puzzler inspired by Japanese culture available now for download on Windows PC
The hot summer weather has many of us scrambling for relaxing afternoons in the shade, and what better way to spend one than with a cozy, casual adventure like Julien Chiari's newly released The shadow of the cherry trees.
The game takes place in a charming fantasy kingdom where "nature and magic intertwine." All seems peaceful until a girl named Yuki is "imprisoned by an ancient guardian in a forgotten temple." Now it's up to her brave best friend Hana to come to the rescue, using her ability to communicate with animal spirits to progress, solving puzzles and "navigating an enchanted forest" along the way. If successful, Hana just might manage to "restore balance between nature and the spirit world" while she's at it. Easier said than done, however, as not all of the forest inhabitants will prove friendly to Hana's endeavour.
The shadow of the cherry trees looks to be the very definition of cozy, with lovely first-person artwork (some of it admittedly AI-assisted) inspired by Japanese culture, blended with simple slideshow-style, point-and-click controls with a verb coin interface for interacting with hotspots. Your journey through the scenic woods promises a "poetic adventure blending magic, tradition, and courage" as you interact with "mythical creatures," collect inventory items and solve a variety of riddles and puzzles "based on culture and spirituality." But give thought to how you face the many obstacles you encounter, as you could soon find that "every choice influences your destiny."
Anyone up for a little animal-themed fantasy adventuring can jump right in, as The shadow of the cherry trees is available now to download on Steam for Windows PC.
