Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth heating up for 2026 release

Spiritual successor to Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley coming to Windows and Mac on Steam

Last year, Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley gave us our first interactive opportunity to venture into the charming world of Moomins, created by Finnish-Swedish writer and artist Tove Jansson and brought to life by Hyper Games. For those who can't wait to go back, there's good news already as a "spiritual successor" called Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is coming in 2026.

While the first game starred the migratory Snufkin returning to Moominvalley, only to find that a series of unwanted parks had sprung up in his absence, the new game stars the book series protagonist himself, the titular Moomintroll. When the beloved hippo-like character "unexpectedly wakes up early from his winter hibernation, he finds himself completely alone for the first time, in a world he barely recognizes." That's because it's winter, of course, and "the familiar landscape of Moominvalley is now cloaked in the frosty veil of the Lady of the Cold." At first Moomintroll feels helpless, "seeking someone to care for him and longing to banish winter," but before long he "reluctantly embarks on a journey into the unknown, learning to forge new friendships and help those in greater need than himself."

While not a direct sequel to Snufkin, Moomintroll promises another "story-driven, cozy puzzle adventure" that shares much in common with its predecessor, not the least of which is its gorgeous watercolour artwork. And as before, the game will be played from a third-person, slightly overhead perspective. As you traverse the lovely snow-covered Moominvalley landscape inspired by Jansson’s Moominland Midwinter, you'll get to meet a variety of fellow Moomins in the protagonist's "quest for warmth and friendship." Along the way, you'll need to solve a number of light environmental puzzles as well in order to progress in your journey.

There's no firm target release date just yet, but whatever the season it arrives, Moomintroll: Winter's Warmth is due to launch on Steam sometime next year for Windows and Mac. If you haven't yet played the previous game, there's no better time as Snufkin is currently on sale, offering 30% off on Steam.
