Hand-drawn point-and-click fantasy adventure coming soon to Steam and the PlayStation store
If you've ever felt like the world is robbing you of your joy, then you'll surely relate to the cast of Smile Thief, an upcoming point-and-click fantasy adventure by Trimeria Studio in which an entire town's inhabitants are experiencing that very thing – literally.
The titular larcenist is an actual demon who threatens to steal everyone's happiness in Trimeria, home to a young minstrel apprentice named Eva. The town's only hope is for Eva to master the art of minstrelsy in time, with help from the "mysterious minstrel Grajo." To succeed, the young protagonist must set out on a journey filled with "charming characters" to interact with, items to collect and combine, puzzles to solve, and "unique challenges" to overcome on a journey that will "lead her to discover the very essence of her calling." Victory isn't guaranteed, however, as "the Smile Thief lurks in the shadows... and each decision will bring Eva closer to one of the three possible endings."
While most of the early resources for Smile Thief are still in the indie developer's native Spanish, there's more than enough on display already to know it will be a lovely hand-drawn and animated, classic-styled adventure. Promising a "tragicomedy full of plot twists that will test Eva's determination," the game will see players visit a variety of locations throughout the medieval-style village, from Eva's grandfather's house to the puppet theater, "discovering secrets and unlocking new paths" along the way. As she assists her fellow townsfolk, from "the blacksmith Sigurd to a peculiar caterpillar stuck in a piano," Eva will solve some puzzles the traditional way, but in keeping with her chosen profession, she will continually learn new "jester-like" skills as well, such as "juggling, music, and storytelling." Decision making is crucial too, as "every interaction with the villagers" has the potential to influence the ultimate fate of Trimeria.
There is no firm target release date for Smile Thief, but be of good cheer because it's "coming soon" on Steam for Windows PC, along with a console version for the PlayStation 5.
