Haunting photographic mystery adventure unveiled for Windows PC on Steam

Some of the creepiest moments in horror movies occur when unexplained phenomena are captured in photos: a ghostly reflection, a face in the window, an ever-present haze lurking nearby. You can count on plenty of that and more in Corporeal, the upcoming supernatural adventure debut from Auckland-based indie developer Cold Out Interactive.

It's the late 1990s, New Zealand, and a series of unexplained events has left you the sole survivor of your accursed bloodline. The only clues to be found are concealed in the "archive of photographs rescued from the ruins of your childhood home." As you piece together the chronology of your ill-fated family history from the pictures left behind, you have the ability to "manipulate the past" and influence the story. In the process, however, you will unwittingly encounter the remnants of "a number of tragic, doomed spectres" in the photos you examine.

Described as a "narratively-driven, paranormal mystery puzzle game," Corporeal is a first-person, chillingly atmospheric point-and-click adventure, although here you're assembling a photo album rather than navigating an existing slideshow. You'll uncover its "dark and enigmatic" story via a number of "retro analog interfaces" that allow you to manipulate real photographs as you see fit. To progress you must complete "tactile, minimalist puzzles, where you combine images of the past to create new scenes." This can be done in a nonlinear manner, however, giving you the opportunity to "alter the narrative and discover hidden secrets and spectres."

There is no target release date for Corporeal just yet, appropriately leaving us only screenshots and video as clues for what to expect. You can already wishlist the game on Steam, however, and sign up for updates from the developer's website in the meantime.

  1. I like what i see, but I wish more indie adventure games are released on GOG as I prefer that now over Steam!
