Free three-part update to popular open-world pirating sandbox adventure coming to PC and Xbox July 20th

Since 2018, Sea of Thieves has been all about allowing players to indulge their inner pirates. And in Guybrush Threepwood, it just so happens that a certain beloved adventure game protagonist dreams of being a pirate. It seems like a match made in heaven, but it's about to become very real, as a free three-part update to the popular buccaneering game called "The Legend of Monkey Island" is coming in July.

Sea of Thieves is a large open-world action-adventure for would-be pirates to play either solo or with others. With oceans to sail, islands to explore (and plunder), treasures to find, reputations to forge, and fighting to do, to name just a few of the available possibilities, the game offers a "playground" for players to approach as they wish. New content is continually being added, including lengthier story-driven quests known as Tall Tales. Next up, in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, developer Rare is bringing the world of Monkey Island to life in a way unlike ever before in a three-part franchise crossover told over the course of three such Tales.

While "The Legend of Monkey Island" will look very much like Sea of Thieves with its whimsically colourful 3D art style and first-person perspective, the story, characters and even gameplay will be all Monkey Island. Following the events of The Curse of Monkey Island, the story follows a bushy-bearded Guybrush (once again voiced by Dominic Armato) after setting sail with Elaine for their honeymoon in the Sea of Thieves and ending up in the ghostly Sea of the Damned. Players will be able to freely explore familiar places like Mêlée Island and Monkey Island, where you'll encounter other iconic characters as well, including LeChuck, Stan the salesman, and Murray the Demonic Talking Skull. You'll engage in plenty of amusing dialogue but you'll also need to "solve puzzles, tussle with adversaries and tackle unexpected trials as you strive to put right situations that have gone bizarrely wrong and confront a looming peril born of powers from both worlds."

The first installment of "The Legend of Monkey Island" will be launched on July 20th, followed by the next two each a month apart. All three Tall Tales are free, but to play you'll need to own the base Sea of Thieves game, which is available on Steam, the Xbox Store or via Game Pass.
