Dark fantasy action-adventure hand-crafted from clay launched by the creators of Lost in Random, Fe and Ghost Giants
Putting out fires might seem like the safer thing to do than recklessly unleashing them in most cases, but it's the power of fire – and friendship – that are key to survival in MoonHood's newly released dark fantasy action-adventure The Midnight Walk.
Players awaken as "The Burnt One," an unseen first-person protagonist who must set out along the "twisted trail of The Midnight Walk." Many monsters guard the way, however, so to survive you'll need to befriend Potboy, a "lost lantern creature" whose flame is the only thing that can "light your way through a conflicting world of wonder and horror." You can also use Potboy as a distraction while you "hide from and evade the many threats of The Dark Itself." The catch is, Potboy's own survival is your responsibility, so throughout five different tales you'll need to work together to "outsmart horrific monsters eager to devour your little friend’s flame."
The name MoonHood might not be familiar, but the Swedish studio was founded by the creators of Lost in Random, Fe and Ghost Giant (as Zoink) so they're certainly no strangers to haunting dark fantasy adventures. The grim, dangerous world of The Midnight Walk is filled with eerie environs and an "eclectic cast" of characters – some of them friendly, the worst of them hostile. Adding to its terrifying allure is the fact that the everything in the game, from "the drooling snarl of monsters to the bristling tree tops that line the journey was first sculpted in clay and then 3D scanned to a meticulous level of detail" before being animated in stop motion. The end result is gorgeous but highly volatile, as this is certainly no leisurely point-and-click adventure. But while you can arm yourself on occasion, the focus here is not on intense, fast-paced combat but rather thoughtful use of your limited abilities and shared resources as you make friends and "navigate a path fraught with both peril and affirmation."
Launching today, The Midnight Walk can be experienced on flatscreen monitors for both PC and PlayStation 5 (with a gamepad recommended), but it also supports VR, playable with either a PC VR or PS VR2 headset as part of a single purchase on Steam and the PlayStation Store.
