Demo also available for Portal-style, first-person 3D gravity-manipulation puzzler
The world feels pretty topsy-turvy these days, and we're frequently told to believe that up is down and down is up. It's disorienting and not at all fun in real life, but it's a whole different story when you're able to make it happen literally, like in the newly released physics puzzler Invertigo, by indie Dutch developer Wednesday Works Games.
With no knowledge of who or where you are, you awaken in some sort of cryo chamber and are addressed as "Subject" by a computer voice. With no further explanation, you're informed that you are a caretaker of sorts, assigned to maintain and repair this facility, restoring power wherever needed. You're all alone, and yet not entirely without companionship, as you'll be joined in your duties by another disembodied voice, that of CARA, the Cryo Awakening Robotic Assistant inside your suit. With no other choice but to carry out your assigned mission, you set out to explore this strange, seemingly abandoned place, but soon find its unique architecture makes it impassable without the use of a special gun that allows you to manipulate gravity.
Presented in first-person, free-roaming 3D, Invertigo is a Portal-inspired environmental puzzle game with light platforming elements. As you traverse cavernous rooms and cramped crawlspaces, you must make use of your newfound tool to turn any surface into a floor, cleaning up any messes and restoring electrical power by placing energy cubes on their associated pressure plates. Along the way, the game's 22 distinct puzzles will increase in challenge as well, requiring additional modules that enable new gravity-related functions. With multiple possible ways to solve them, these obstacles are designed to stimulate creative thinking from different perspectives. And when you need some help, your trusty companion will be there to give you "very useful (as well as some less useful) feedback and advice." Along the way, you'll want to keep your eyes peeled for any "anomalies and data logs" you find, as they may just hold the key to uncovering more about this facility and how you ended up here.
If you're ready to dive in headfirst, the complete version of Invertigo has now launched on Steam for Windows PC, though if you'd rather make a tentative first foray onto its floors, walls and ceilings, a playable demo is available as well.
