Hand-drawn, nightmarish point-and-click horror adventure unveiled on Steam

Ever had a bad dream filled with strange, terrifying creatures stalking a macabre world with no way to escape? Perhaps you woke up in a cold sweat, relieved to discover you're actually safe and sound. The star of the upcoming horror game Outlying Island isn't so lucky, as waking up for her only confirms that the nightmare was real. 

Story details are intentionally sparse, but the "unsettling" narrative features a young woman who suddenly wakes up on the shore of an island that has been taken over by the authorities and left largely deserted except for the "otherworldly creatures lurking around every corner." With only hazy memories of what came before, you'll soon find yourself even more bewildered by the "surreal, layered spaces" of this island. To uncover the truth behind mysterious events that appear to date back all the way back to the 1970s, you mill need to "investigate the decrepit buildings" and "learn the nightmarish truth behind this place." Unless, that is, you'd rather give in and "let the madness take all that’s left from you," because before long you'll come to understand that "those who stare into the abyss will find the abyss staring back at them, until they too become a part of it."

Described as a "horror adventure with puzzle and exploration mechanics," Outlying Island sounds far more conventional than it looks. Set in a world "where the surreal and reality meet," the game's early screenshots and foreign video footage show off an abundance of bizarre imagery, grotesque monsters, and horrific environments that will leave you fighting for your sanity, if not your very life. Your objectives, besides getting off this godforsaken island alive, are to "discover anomalies and find strange energy sources" as you navigate the "eerie distortions and intertwined spaces" you encounter. Only by keeping your wits about you can you hope to overcome the disturbing obstacles in your path and solve the mystery of what brought you here and why. 

There is no firm target release date for Outlying Island just yet, but the game is due to launch on Steam sometime in the third quarter of 2025 for Windows PC.
