Paranormal survival horror blending pixel art characters and 3D environments available now on Steam

Most adventure games occur in fictional places that aren't real, but their settings are meant to inhabit their own internal universes, at least. Not so in Enigma of Fear, the newly released thriller from indie developers Dumativa and Cellbit, which sends players into a world so unfamiliar, it isn't known to exist at all.

Players control a young woman named Mia, who, along with her faithful pet dog Lupi, sets out to "unravel the mysterious disappearance of her father, Mr. Veríssimo, one of the world’s most skilled agents and leader of Ordo Realitas, an organization of paranormal detectives." Their search somehow leads them to a realm called "the Perimeter – a place that doesn't exist." But how can that be? What is this non-place and why did her father come here? These questions and more can only be answered by thoroughly exploring the open world before you, where you can "let your own curiosity and deduction guide your next steps and experiences." With help from Lupi when needed, you must "investigate clues like a real detective" as you begin to unravel the mystery of "the Cult of Fear – a group responsible for the disappearance of countless agents from Ordo Realitas." But beware, as there are many horrors here, and you'll need to defeat the "terrible monsters who'll try to stop you" with either your gun or melee weapons if you're to succeed and escape alive.

Enigma of Fear is presented using a distinctive combination of largely isometric 3D background environments and 2D pixel art character sprites. The Perimeter consists of five distinct regions that you can explore in any order in search of clues. Along the way you'll encounter fully voiced friend and foe alike – the former being other agents of Ordo Realitas, the latter in the form of "brutal bosses: terrifying paranormal creatures [that] will lurk and attack at Mia’s slightest misstep." How you wish to proceed is up to you, including partnering up with agents like "the hacker Samuel and the occultist Agatha" or going it alone as you "examine documents and evidence, solve enigmas, make use of your equipment, review your discoveries in Mia’s mental map and much more." Thankfully you'll never be totally alone, as you'll have to rely on Lupi to help you stay connected to reality after especially "dangerous paranormal encounters."

If the Perimeter actually existed, you could travel there right away, as Enigma of Fear is available now to download on Steam for Windows PC.
