Twentieth game in the long-running photographic mystery series in Sweden coming to PC on January 1st

Some people wake up on January 1st feeling a little under the weather from the previous night's countdown festivities. But hangover or no, this coming new year there's a much different sort of affliction that all adventure gamers can look forward to in the form of Murder Malady, the new Carol Reed game from MDNA Games.

Another mystery for the transplanted amateur British sleuth in Norrköping, Sweden is always noteworthy, but this one is particularly so as Murder Malady represents the incredible twentieth adventure in the long-running series. The lengthy passage of time is integral to this particular story as well, as it involves an old acquaintance of Carol's named Immodia. Many years earlier, Immodia experienced a "horrid, inexplicable family tragedy" that has haunted her ever since, even through adulthood. She had long ago given up hope of uncovering the circumstances behind the traumatic event, until out of the blue she received a "strange message from her mother after 24 years of silence." Now, with a connection to her past open once again, Immodia decides to reach out to Carol for help in order to finally reveal the truth.

Regular Carol Reed fans know exactly what's coming next, as developer Mikael Nyquist isn't straying from the tried-and-true formula that has served the series so well for so long. As usual, the new game plays out like a first-person, point-and-click slideshow adventures made up of hundreds of photographs taken on location by Nyquist around his native Sweden. Whether scenic or grimy, urban or rural, historic or modern, the settings always feel like an intimate tour of the less familiar parts of the country. But there's more than sightseeing to do, as there will of course be plenty of characters to question, items to collect and puzzles to solve along the way if you're to help Immodia finally get closure on her decades-old ordeal.

Also coming as no surprise to series fans, Murder Malady will be available to purchase as a digital download exclusively from the MDNA website for Windows PC. There isn't much longer to wait, but to help pass the time until you ring in 2025, stay tuned for Adventure Game Hotspot's upcoming interview with the man behind the camera himself.
