Demo available for first-person 3D psychological thriller on Steam for Windows PC

On a list of things guaranteed to traumatize you for life, suffering through a horrific child abduction is surely near the top. So for players who survived the terrors of the 2020 horror adventure Don't Be Afraid, don't think that's the end of it, as you'll need to deal with the inevitable psychological fallout in the upcoming sequel.

In the original game, players filled the pint-sized shoes of 11-year-old David, who was kidnapped from his home and left alone in a mansion filled with puzzles and traps under the watchful eye of a "sadistic psychopath." Having lived to tell the tale, 15 years later David's past is coming back to haunt him in torturous subconscious ways through nightmares and flashbacks of those dreadful events. His psychiatrist believes he must confront his fears directly, and recommends that they uncover his repressed memories of the house of horrors to tackle the trauma head on. Bad idea. As David begins to relive his worst memories, he is sucked into a "fresh, blood-curdling mystery" with a "monstrous entity" stalking him every step of the way.

As with its predecessor, Don't Be Afraid 2 is a first-person 3D adventure that lets you freely explore a fright-filled old mansion, often in the shadowy darkness armed only with a flashlight for meagre illumination. To piece together the full picture of what happened here so long ago, you must thoroughly explore for clues about the protagonist's past through "disturbing drawings, notes and documents that reveal the unpleasant truth." Along the way there will be a number of "terrifying escape rooms" to complete, "each with different challenges and themes." You can't relax in between the "mind-bending puzzles," however, as a hideous creature is there with you as the "boundaries between dreams and reality" become indecipherably blurred. Choices matter too, as how you approach the investigation impacts the way the story plays out, leading to one of two possible endings

No specific target release date has been announced yet, but Don't Be Afraid 2 is very close now, expected to launch sometime in October or November on Steam and GOG. In the meantime, you can take your first tentative steps via the playable demo available now for Windows PC.

Note: Since time of writing, the launch date has been confirmed for October 28th.
