"Direct continuation" of the MacVenture cult classic unveiled for PC and consoles

If there's a Guinness world record for longest period between video game installments, then the upcoming The Uninvited 2: Let Nothing You Dismay is surely vying for top spot, due to arrive forty(ish) years after its classic predecessor.

The original Uninvited was released in 1986 by ICOM Simulations, sending players in search of a missing sibling into an old sorcerer's mansion that's been cursed and seeking its latest victim. This time around you control Mina Harper, a "paranormal investigator haunted by the demon known as Big Red, whose essence you carry like a curse." Ten years after "surviving the nightmare that claimed your family," you find yourself called to another terrifying mansion "steeped in tragedy," whose very walls "hold memories, curses, and voices that demand to be heard." To uncover its "dark history" and the "truth hidden in its bones," you must use both natural and supernatural means through exploration, puzzle solving, and Mina's psychic visions that allow her to "relive past horrors" and "glimpse the otherworldly veil – at the cost of her sanity."

A co-production between GrahfMetal, Cerulean Games and Zojoi, the creators of Shadowgate who also worked on the original NES version of Uninvited, this game promises to be a "direct continuation of the 8-bit cult hit ... with modern design sensibilities." Although not TOO modern. Let Nothing You Dismay looks like it could have come out shortly after its predecessor, with a familiar play style and "hand-crafted visuals that faithfully capture the eerie charm of the NES era." The screen is divided up into the viewable (and interactive) play area and inventory on the top, and text descriptions of objects and events on the bottom, along with a minimap to navigate the mansion. Of course you can expect plenty of puzzles, traps and foes that threaten your existence – and your very soul – to go with a rich combination of "atmospheric dread, psychological tension, and startling scares that honor the original while evolving the genre." There is no word yet on whether the sequel will include any kind of limited-move restrictions that characterized the original.

It's still too early for a target release date for The Uninvited 2: Let Nothing You Dismay, but the game is now ready for wishlisting on Steam for Windows and Mac, with console versions for PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch platforms planned as well.
