Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story tuning up for release
Spinoff story-driven action-adventure to star League of Legends champions Nunu and Willump
More and more mainstream video game franchises seem to be hopping on the adventure game bandwagon! Following the earlier Monkey Island / Sea of Thieves crossover comes word of a new single-player spinoff (action) adventure called Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story by Tequila Works.
Players control two familiar champions from League of Legends, the popular free-to-play online multiplayer battle arena game that launched in 2009. Instead of engaging in team-based combat, however, here a young boy named Nunu sets out “across the frozen wilds of the Freljord” in search of his mother, with help from his best friend, the yeti Willump. With their “endless imagination and shared love of snowball fights,” the two must navigate a world “both beautiful and treacherous, making new allies (and enemies) on a journey of family, friendship, and magic.” Nunu and Willump will need to work together in order to succeed, using the strengths of each to overcome the many obstacles and dangers in their path. Along the way their bond of friendship will be forged even more deeply, and “every snowy step brings [them] closer to the truth about Nunu and Willump’s past.”
With the more story-driven focus of Song of Nunu comes a whole new visual presentation. Gone is League of Legends‘ isometric persective in favour of a colourful third-person 3D view. Traversing the Freljord will be a very hands-on experience as you “hike, climb, and sled [your] way across the … frostbitten land full of harsh blizzards, ferocious wolves and enchantment.” But there will also be puzzles to solve in your travels, both of the logical and environmental type, as you begin to “uncover what secrets lie hidden beneath the ice.” As you progress, you can expect to encounter various other League of Legends champions from the region, inclduing “Braum, Ornn, Volibear, and Lissandra – whose twisted magic threatens to bury the world in Dark Ice.”
There is no target release date yet, but Song of Nunu: A League of Legends Story is on track to be completed sometime before the end of 2023, and is already available for wishlisting on Steam for Windows PC, with a console version for Nintendo Switch expected as well.
