A Pretty Broken Adventure being put together for PC

Hand-drawn point-and-click fantasy adventure underway from the creator of Cleo: A Pirate's Tale

Solo German developer Christoph Schultz first arrived on the adventure gaming scene in 2021 with the charming comedy adventure Cleo: A Pirate's Tale. For an encore, Schultz is leaving behind the high seas of swashbuckling buccaneers for the fantasy world of A Pretty Broken Adventure and bringing whole different look than its predecessor with him.

Not only are story details sparse at this point, even the developer himself has formed only a "really rough outline" that he expects will "evolve organically" as he goes along. What we do know is that there will be three playable characters – as yet unnamed and themselves subject to change during the development process – who find themselves on a "crazy journey [in] a vibrant fantasy world where anything seems possible." When the three friends become separated, they'll need to find a way to reunite and hopefully discover a way to all get back home together.

In A Pretty Broken Adventure, gone is the retro RPG-styled top-down pixel art of Cleo, replaced with a delightfully cartoony hand-painted third-person look with a more traditional point-and-click style of gameplay. Inspired by the novels of Walter Moers; the zanier classic adventures like Sam & Max Hit the Road and Toonstruck; and the more "wildly creative" fantasy films of the 1980s such as Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story, the game world is intended to be one that feels like elements from "every piece of fiction or fairytale that you've read in your childhood" have been melded together into something that seems somehow familiar and yet unlike you've ever experienced it before. Expect the unexpected here, in a story that refuses to take itself too seriously no matter how "epic, bizarre, and unbelievable" events may become.

There is no target launch date this early into production, but A Pretty Broken Adventure is already available for wishlisting on Steam, and Schultz plans to release a monthly devlog on his YouTube channel to update followers with "a detailed and honest insight into the development process," the first of which has already been released.
