Sequel to VR-exclusive sci-fi mystery The Secret of Retropolis coming later this year

Machines may inevitably take over one day, but that could prove to be a whole lot of fun if it's anything like like Peanut Button's Retropolis VR series, which is due to get a sequel this year in the form of Retropolis 2: Never Say Goodbye.

Set in a world long after human beings have disappeared but whose memory are kept alive by the robots left behind, 2021's The Secret of Retropolis introduced players to heavy drinking private eye Philip Log, who had no idea what he was in for when he accepted a case of a stolen jewel. That game ended on something of a cliffhanger, and while details about the sequel are sparse, it promises to continue the story of the "hard-boiled robo-detective, and Jenny Montage, the automated femme fatale that just can’t keep herself out of trouble." This time around, players will have to "engage a battle of the minds with a sick new villain and use only your wits, your hovering inventory, and a pair of extendo-arms to uncover the truth."

As with its predecessor, Never Say Goodbye is a first-person 3D virtual reality adventure in which everything has been hand-painted, though the new game will be spruced up further with "improved graphics and character animation." It will consist of four discrete episodes that even newcomers can pick up and enjoy as its own self-contained "miniseries," and gameplay will once again involve using Philip's stretchy appendages to "collect items from afar, use them to overcome obstacles, and move the plot forward." There will also be logic puzzles to solve, new rotation mechanics to master, and "movement between different environments, offering a more challenging adventure with a substantially longer play time than the previous game."

There is no firm target release date just yet, but Retropolis 2: Never Say Goodbye is due to arrive on Steam and other major VR platforms sometime later this year.
